I actually think that Onyx wouldn't be that bad of a choice. Why do you think it would be cheesy? I don't listen to them particularly often, however, they were a solid hardcore hip hop group.
I love the way you're thinking of going with this mix. Late 80s highlights of a rugged guy like McDaniel and some hard hip hop from the same time. It's a good choice, imo. It would go well alongside the athletic and aggressive playing style of Xavier.
